The term Vital Villages has been quite deliberately chosen. We believe that villages perform a vital function in maintaining the cohesion of rural society. However the vitality must be maintained. Some regard villages as the template for the Big Society. If that is the case then it is under threat. We seem to hear daily of shops and pubs closing, of local libraries being lost, of the decline in bus services, schools under threat, the loss of local fire stations, and the unaffordability of housing in rural areas. The list seems endless. And there are no easy solutions. What suits one village may not be a solution for another but we can learn from one another.
